Speeding: Exceeding the posted speed limit, driving too fast for conditions, or racing – is a commonly neglected and dangerous driving behavior by drivers which often contributes to numerous fatalities nationwideWhy does it matter?
Speeding is the most common traffic violation in Virginia. According to the Virginia State Crime Commission, approximately 540,000 charges are brought for speeding infractions in the Commonwealth each year.

There are two types of speeding offenses in Virginia,
1. speeding 2. reckless driving
Virginia law requires all drivers to obey legally posted speed limits throughout the commonwealth. Under Code of Virginia Section 46.2-852, reckless driving occurs when a driver places other people or property in danger of harm or injury. Rreckless driving is a Class 1 misdemeanor under the Code of Virginia Section 46.2-868. Upon conviction, offenders can spend 12 months in county jail and pay $2,500 in criminal fines.Speeding is generally charged up until 19 mph over the limit. Reckless driving, which can be considered a criminal offense rather than a traffic infraction, is marked past 20 mph

Throughout Virginia, approximately 500,000 drivers received speeding tickets and 120,000 others faced reckless driving charges in 2018. 98% of speeding tickets were for driving at least 10mph above the limit. On average, drivers faced $190 in fines, including legal costs and court fees.

According to the 2020 statistics from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, of the more than 105,600 reported traffic accidents that occurred, speeding was listed as a factor in 22,479 crashes, killing 406 victims and injuring another 11,528.
